
SFR Mail is based on a messaging infrastructure linked to the operator’s fixed or mobile subscription. The @sfr.fr address is automatically provisioned upon subscription, and its lifespan depends on the contract. This integrated architecture has technical implications that most consumer guides overlook, particularly regarding encryption, IMAP configuration, and account retention after cancellation.
TLS 1.3 and SFR Mail ports: the source of disconnections since 2024
The majority of connection incidents reported on SFR Mail since 2024 have nothing to do with server outages. They result from the gradual deactivation of TLS 1.0 and TLS 1.1 on the operator’s side, a tightening applied by all email infrastructure providers in France.
Specifically, any email client configured before 2024 with an outdated encryption mode or an unsecured port is rejected without an explicit error message. The classic symptom: Thunderbird, Outlook, or Apple Mail displays “unable to connect to the server” while webmail works normally in the browser.
We recommend checking three parameters as a priority to learn more about SFR Mail and understand recurring errors:
- IMAP on port 993 with SSL/TLS (not STARTTLS, not the unencrypted port 143) for receiving incoming messages.
- SMTP on port 465 in SSL/TLS for sending. Port 587 with STARTTLS still works in some cases, but 465 remains the most reliable after security updates.
- The client’s TLS version must be at least 1.2, ideally 1.3. On older versions of Thunderbird (prior to 102) or Outlook 2013, this compatibility is not guaranteed.
This technical point explains why the same SFR Mail account can work on a recent smartphone and fail on a PC whose email software has not been updated.

Two-factor authentication on SFR Mail: activation and limitations
SFR now offers two-factor authentication (2FA) to secure access to email. This option, documented in guides updated in 2026, allows validation of the connection by a second factor after entering the password.
Activation is done from the SFR customer area, not from the webmail itself. This distinction generates confusion: the webmail does not present any 2FA settings in its internal parameters.
In terms of cybersecurity, 2FA primarily protects against unauthorized access after password theft. It does not compensate for a weak password or the absence of TLS encryption on the local client. Both measures are complementary, not interchangeable.
Another limitation to be aware of: SFR Mail 2FA concerns webmail access and the mobile application. On a third-party IMAP client, behavior may vary. Some software does not handle the second factor and requires a dedicated application password, a feature that SFR has not documented as clearly as Google or Microsoft.
IMAP configuration for SFR Mail on third-party clients: exact server settings
Manual configuration remains necessary on many email clients, especially on Linux or older versions of Outlook. The servers to be entered have not changed since the Numericable migration, but encryption settings must be adjusted.
Here are the server settings to use:
- Incoming IMAP server: imap.sfr.fr, port 993, SSL/TLS encryption.
- Outgoing SMTP server: smtp.sfr.fr, port 465, SSL/TLS encryption.
- Username: the full address in @sfr.fr.
- Authentication: normal password (or application password if 2FA is activated).
Old Numericable clients must use the same SFR servers since the merging of infrastructures. Addresses in @numericable.fr still work as aliases, but numericable.fr servers are no longer operational for IMAP/SMTP configuration.
Specific case of the SFR Mail mobile application
The SFR Mail application available on iOS and Android automatically manages these settings. We observe that synchronization issues on the app rarely stem from server configuration and more from battery or background data restrictions imposed by the operating system.
On Android, it is necessary to check that the app is not subject to aggressive battery optimization. On iOS, data retrieval should be set to “Push” or “Every 15 minutes” rather than “Manually”.

Account retention for SFR Mail after subscription cancellation
An SFR Mail account is linked to the subscription contract, not to the user. This distinction has direct consequences: in the event of cancellation of the fixed or mobile line, SFR reserves the right to delete the email account and all associated data.
The service’s general conditions specify that prolonged inactivity or expiration of the contract may lead to the cancellation of the SFR Mail service registration. In practice, there is a grace period after cancellation, but its duration is not contractually guaranteed.
For anyone using an @sfr.fr address as their primary email, this point represents a concrete risk. Migrating to an independent email provider (not dependent on an ISP) remains the only way to maintain lasting access to emails in case of a change of operator.
Data transfer before cancellation
SFR does not offer an automatic email box export tool. The transfer must be done manually via IMAP by connecting the SFR account and the destination account in the same email client, then moving the folders. This operation can take several hours depending on the volume of stored messages.
The maximum capacity of the SFR Mail box also conditions the volume to be migrated. Beyond this limit, the reception and storage of new messages are no longer guaranteed by the service, which can complicate a late transfer if the box is full.
